Gun-Toting DUI Driver Drives Onto Deerpath Middle School Lawn: Blotter | Lake Forest, IL Patch

LAKE FOREST, IL — The following information comes from Lake Forest and Lake Bluff police and Lake County court records as a record of those arrested by police. Readers are reminded that an arrest is not an indication of guilt, and criminal charges, which represent merely accusations by the state, are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Circuit Clerk of Courts. All persons named are innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Jesus L. Ramirez-Lopez, 51, of the 1100 block of Westmoreland Avenue, Waukega, was arrested on April 21 and charged with felony theft of a lawn mower that belonged to James Martin & Associates and was tracked down using GPS technology. Police reported that Ramirez told officers he was looking through the garbage when he saw the mower on a nearby lawn and said he did not know why he took it or what he was going to do with it.

Nicholas Mondragon, 28, of the 2100 block of North Elmwood Avenue, Waukegan, was arrested following a traffic stop for speeding around the intersection of Waukegan and Old Mill roads around noon on May 9 on an active arrest warrant for failure to appear in Lake County court in connection with a charge of domestic battery.

Miroslav Benculak, 56, of the 17700 block of West Salisbury Drive, Gurnee, was arrested around 9 p.m. on May 9 in the 1100 block of Inverleith Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and DUI with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater after officers were dispatched to a call that someone had crashed into a tree there. Police found the Jeep involved in the crash had stopped about three blocks away from the crash site, leaving a trail of fluid behind. Benculak was bleeding from the head and mouth and the windshield was crashed from the apparent impact of his head during the crash. Lake Forest Fire Department personnel took him to the emergency room at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital for evaluation, and a sample later revealed his blood alcohol concentration at the hospital was 0.233, nearly three times the legal limit for intoxication.

Abraham Cerda-Custodio, 29, of the 2800 block of Hillside Avenue, Waukegan, was arrested around 4:30 a.m. on May 22 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, with a suspended license and in possession of on open container of cannabis after officers were dispatched to a one-car crash at Route 41 and Route 60. They found a downed light pole and an Infiniti in a ditch that appeared to have been headed east on Route 60 before crashing into the pole. The driver, Cerda-Custodio, told officers we was unsure how the crash happened and believed that he was in Carpentersville. He was taken to Lake Forest Hospital and subsequently issued citations for driving an uninsured motor vehicle and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver.

John Wolf, 48, of the 1400 block of Lakewood Drive, Lake Forest, was arrested around 1:30 a.m. on May 26 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of a concealed weapon while intoxicated after officers came across a Jeep stopped with its engine running in a grass field in front of Deerpath Middle School, about 25 feet off the road with damage to its body and both tires on its passenger side blown out. Wolf, the driver, was slumped over and had to be awoken by officers, who found a small pistol in his jacket pocket. Police said he smelled of alcohol but declined medical treatment prior to his arrest. He was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Corey A. Grant, 42, of the 3800 block of North 60th Street, Milwaukee, was arrested around 2:30 a.m. on May 28 and charged with misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon after he was pulled over for driving 76 mph on Route 41. Officers reported they ordered the driver out of the car after smelling cannabis and found he had a loaded pistol in his front pocket but no license to carry a concealed weapon. Grant was also ticketed for speeding.

Bonnie K. Koukas, 42, of the 5700 block of North Ridge Avenue, Gurnee, was arrested on June 3 on a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with a police investigation into an earlier incident that took place on the 1100 block of Kelmscott Way.

Siquortney Rodgers, 31, of the 1800 block of McKool Avenue, Streamwood, was arrested around 3:30 a.m. on June 4 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and DUI with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater following a traffic stop on Route 41. Police got a call about a silver Kia driving without no lights in the middle of the night, and when they pulled it over, its driver, Rodgers, told them she believed she was headed home to Streamwood from Chicago. She would go on to fail field sobriety tests and be taken into custody, later providing officers with a sample indicating her breath alcohol concentration was 0.119.

Erika Rodriquez, 46, of the 2600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, North Chicago, was arrested around 12:30 a.m. on June 7 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and no valid drivers license following a traffic stop at Route 41 and Route 60. An officer stopped to check on a motorist on the left inside shoulder of Route 41 and noticed two unopened bottles of Modelo beer in the center console and two large cases of Modelo — one opened and one unopened — in the back seat. Rodriquez, the unlicensed driver, admitted that she had been drinking before driving and was taken into custody based on the officer's observations and sobriety testing. Officers also issued her citations for no vehicle insurance and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol.

Corwin W. Thomas, 29, of the 6700 block of North Rockwell Street, Chicago, was arrested around 1 a.m. on June 11 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop near Route 41 and Westleigh Road. Thomas was also issued a citation for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver.

Sydney N. Turnage, 23, of the 2300 block of South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 7 p.m. on June 12 on an active arrest warrant for failure to appear in court in DuPage County and charged with driving with a suspended license after officers showed up at the scene of a two-car crash at Route 41 and Deerpath Road in which she was at fault.
