A Thelma woman was arrested on Independence Day after she allegedly overdosed on methamphetamine while her nine-year-old son was in her care, according to a Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy.

The citation said that the deputy had been dispatched to a residence on Buskirk Drive in Thelma in reference to a possible drug overdose when he discovered Kimberly Hayden, 44, of Thelma, “sitting in the floor of her bedroom with her nine-year-old son sitting on the bed.”

Hayden was “shaking and rocking back and forth” as well as “mumbling,” the deputy noted in the citation, and he advised Hayden’s 19-year-old daughter to take the child outside.

The deputy said he attempted to speak with Hayden, but that she “acted like she couldn’t understand what (he) was saying,” and that, after asking her several times what she had taken, she replied, stating she had taken “nothing.”

According to the citation, Hayden could not stand up without help and couldn’t walk through the house without forgetting where she was going, leading to EMS personnel administering Narcan to her on the front porch of the residence before transporting her to Paintsville Appalachian Regional Healthcare.

While Hayden’s father was looking for her ID in her purse, the citation said, the deputy spotted a “round metal container commonly used to carry drugs in,” and inside the container, a plastic bag with the residue of suspected methamphetamine in it. Hayden’s father allegedly told the deputy that there was a “pipe” in the bathroom next to the bedroom in which Hayden was found, according to the citation, and that pipe “turned out to be a blue plastic straw with residue in it as well.”

Hayden was medically cleared at Paintsville ARH before being transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center and lodged on charges of endangering the welfare of a minor, first-degree and first-offense possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

As of presstime on July 5, Hayden remained in custody at the BSRDC and no court dates had been set in her case.
