A Toorak estate dating back to the 1850s that has drawn comparisons to The Great Gatsby is seeking a new party host, complete with a bluestone wine cellar and marble fireplaces.
One of Toorak’s first houses, reminiscent of the grand estates in the classic novel The Great Gatsby, is on the market with a $13m-$14.3m asking price.
The heritage house at 19 Woodside Cres, known as ‘Woodside’, has a grand Italianate facade and opulent interior, including high ceilings, marble open fireplaces, pillars, chandeliers and polished floorboards.
The Stonnington Planning Scheme stated that Woodside is historically significant because its cellar and some external sections were part of one of the first four houses known to be built in Toorak during the 1850s.

RT Edgar Toorak director Jeremy Fox said the four-bedroom house “has all the original features and a magnificent bluestone wine cellar”.
“It was built in about 1857, I think, and added to later on,” Mr Fox said.
Renowned architect Michael Munckton renovated the period home which last sold for $1.42m in 1997, according to CoreLogic.
The property has two street frontages on Tintern Ave and Woodside Cres and an elevated tessellated veranda with original iron lacework.
“It’s got the most magnificent rooms with bay windows, a formal lounge and grand entrance foyer,” Mr Fox said.
“It’s one of those classic, beautiful Melbourne houses.
“I just love the feel of it, it has got a huge presence from the street.”
Mr Fox said the house was “like The Great Gatsby”.
In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book, set in the 1920s, Americans live in large European-style estates close to New York.
A film based on the novel, directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher, grossed $353.6m at the box office.
Set on 1452sq m, Woodside’s family room opens to a north-facing rear garden through French doors.
The outdoor area includes an entertaining courtyard, built-in barbecue, feature pond and gardener’s cottage.
Mr Fox said the home’s owners were keen to move into a new house now their children had grown up.
He said mostly local families have expressed interest in the “elegant” property.
“It’s a short walk to Toorak and Hawksburn villages,” he added.
“It’s in a dead-end street, a quiet cul-de-sac, so you don’t get a lot of traffic.”
